This will be the last blogpost in this blog. I
met with the HBB jury last week and apparently all my maps and logbook were in
order because now I am an approved HBB paddler and will most probably get the
HBB-number 172! Yay!!! 😃I’m the only woman to finish this year out of the 4 that
started and going through the statistics (got some help here from my way more
competitive husband) realise I have the 5th fastest time for women
over all. Last but not least and definitely most important, I really enjoyed
the whole journey with fantastic, good and some not so good days from
Svinesundsbron to Haparanda. All good reasons to feel pleased about how this
project turned out. It was a very nice meeting and fun to bring back memories from
each day. Later when arriving home reading Jim Danielsson’s book I started to
think I might have to retire early to fit in all the kayaking I found
inspiration for 😛.

Right now I’m on my way home from a business trip
to Luleå flying over a long stretch of islands that I passed with my kayak
earlier this summer. It is a really cool feeling to have such detailed
knowledge of the Swedish coastline that I recognise lots of places that I
kayaked passed; Rödkallen, Junkön and Bjuröklubb were all far enough east for
me to see through the small window and later when getting closer to Stockholm I
saw Öregrund and Väddö, including the incredibly long strait/channel that took
me almost a day to complete. Picked up my iPad that still contains the
images of my daily routes so that I could follow my track in detail from above.

When going through all the previous posts using a
large screen I realised the absolutely embarrassing amounts of spelling error
that slipped through late night's proof reading (not sure I can even call it
proof reading when seeing the result...) in the tent. Sorry about that! For those of you starting
to read the blog now, consider yourselves lucky, I think almost all of them are
gone now. I also think signing up for "English spelling 101" should
be a task on my to do list since it became painfully clear that I can't spell
either "coffee" or "weather". All the times I wrote coffe
or wheather were not typos, it was due to good old SBS (Skit Bakom Spakarna).

morning paddle with my husband two weeks ago. Autumn is great that way, you don’t
have to get up super early to see the sunrise 👍🏻😀☀️!!!

Woke up in the middle of the night yesterday dreaming I was paddling :-). Pitch-black, I could not get my head around to where I was and what was happening. Feeling the matress with my hands I was clearly not in the kayak but this was not the tent either. After a confused couple of minutes I finally realised I was at our summer house, sleeping in a normal bed, the blinds pulled down. Being so used to the tent and it never being dark up north it was really uncomfortable not seeing anything and not being able to orient myself. Guess it will take a couple of days before my mind is back on track (have also been able to convince my husband not to pull the blinds all the way down for a while).
Trying to summarise the trip is not easy, it has been a very varied experience in every sense but mostly a very positive one. To see the entire Swedish coastline and how nature changes along the way in regards to both flora and fauna, with salt water on the west and south coast to gradually go over to fresh water far up north and the alteration that comes with it in architecture of both houses and jettys has been facinating. I've seen so many beatiful places and camped at so many fantastic islands.
The more challanging days have forced me to find mental strategies to just keep going and I've come to realise how much you can choose your attitude. Your mind (at least mine) is easily fooled and choosing to rethink a situation in a positive way will affect the way you intrepret it. When having bad weather like fog, hard winds or rain it's so easy to just think "That's so typical! Fog, when the sun is shining back home!" but I've instead chosen to focus on how lucky I am to have this weather today and not for example four days ago when I did a big crossing. That has made a great difference for me and stopped a lot of negative thoughts and sulky behaviour while paddling. Distractions are also good, listening to music or singing or just trying to think of something completely different. When having strong head wind I've tried to think that every paddle stroak will bring me forwards, if just a little bit, while sitting on the beach or in the tent won't.
The good days I've just had a sense of complete happiness and harmony and have relished every moment. There has been quite a lot of these days and I've come to realise I really like being able to have everything with me that I need and to just pack it all up in the morning and continue without leaving any trace behind. It's such a nice contrast to everyday life when stuff and gadgets are plentyful and almost seem to consume us, you don't need that much really to live comfortably. With that said I don't deny I've highly appreciated being able to stop at nice restaurants or cafes and enjoyed the comfort these places have provided. The contrast though between this and the simple life in the tent have made these experiences so much more memorable and brought the enjoyment to another level.
I've also been very lucky with not having any physical pains or problems during the trip except from swollen and stiff fingers and a rash on my butt :-) (probably from sitting in damp or wet clothes all day every day) but nothing that have affected my ablilty to paddle.
So when you finnish something like this you always get the question if you'd ever do it again and well, yes I think I could and would appreciate a repete run along most of the coast if I could only skip the coast of Halland and Skåne. I found this part boring and monotonous to paddle and way too overcrowded to comfortably be able to sleep in a tent, extremely shallow water hundreds of meters out from the shore (standing in knee-high water in the middle of one of these bays having lunch next to the kayak, not being able to get ashore will stay in my memory forever) and just beach after beach most of them very similar looking. I think this part is better enjoyed from land.
In this last post (there might be one more when I hopefully get approved by the HBB jury sometime during the upcoming autumn) I would like to thank everybody that has followed my journey here on the blog or on Facebook and all the great inspiring comments you've given! Everybody I know and don't know, all friends, family and colleagues.
Special thanks to:
All the people along the way that offered me a place to stay the night and fed me delicious food. Highly appreciated!
Joe, old friend from New Zealand who visited us last summer and whos inspirational motorcycle journey around the world got me thinking about this trip again and made me realise that it is possible to follow through on desired projects. You just have to decide to go for it.
The two Annas (Anna D: personal trainer and Anna G: physical therapist) that kept my body in shape and got me ready for this trip.
Kajaksidan and Jörgen Kard for help with finding a suitable kayak and paddle and a lesson improving my paddling technice.
And last but definitely not least, my family, Erik, Carl and Ebba for being supporting from the start of the idea that I would be away from you for such a long time to do this!!! I owe you big time!!!
To: Vitikari udde, Haparanda
Distance: 22,5 km
Total distance: 2416 km
Wind: N 3-8 m/s
Weather: Sunny, 20 C
So today was my last day, only had a bit more than 20 kilometers to go and despite head wind that should not be a problem.
Started my morning by having a shower (found one just next to the toilet provided by the harbor, the door was open and there was no fee) to spare my family who would have to spend the rest of the day with me in the car.
Got going about a quarter to nine and took my time this morning to really go slow and enjoy it. Passed under the bridge to Seskarö and after a few more hours turned up towards the mouth of Torne River.

The current here was visible when looking at seaweeds and rocks and all of a sudden I was more or less stuck in an area with very dense seaweed. Had to get my rudder out of the water to actually move forwards. When finally getting out of this place and a little bit further I saw them!
My family was standing there on Vitikari head with balloons cheering. It was an amazing feeling! Got out of the water and up to the cairn, put my hand on it and had the compulsory photograph taken.
That cairn is actually placed in the middle of a garden belonging to a small summer house so it did not at all look as I expected. Just as everyone else is saying the mosquitos are nasty here and to get out of here as soon as possible I reckoned I found a great spot just a kilometre up the river where there was a place to get the car all the way down to the water. It was not a great idea... The current made paddling up the river extremely hard work, at one point I thought I'd have to just give up and go back but the thought of that got my blood pumping and I managed to get to the shore, exhausted.
The rest was done in classic Omberg/Blomberg family-style, got all gear in the car, the kayak on the roof racks and drove all the way back to Stockholm, keeping stops to a minimum, arrived safely back home 11 hours later. We managed to pass the Höga Kusten-bridge at sunset and view was definitely worth a stop, this must be the most beautiful bridge in Sweden!
Great sunny morning and an early start, yes! Started this day by paddling a lot of open sea and the conditions were perfect, sunny and light wind from southwest. The last couple of days I started listening to the Swedish radio show "Sommarpratarna" and getting entertained by all their stories the hours and kilometres pass by quickly and easily.
I had a loosely set goal today and that was to reach Seskarö so that I could have a great last meal at Seskarö Wärdshus. I've visited a fair number of nice restaurants during this trip and to top it all off by eating at another one recommended by "The White Guide" I reckoned was a great way to end it all. By lunch it was looking good and I realised I would be at Seskarö around half past five 😀, sweet!
The paddling during that afternoon was not easy though, the wind was strong and the waves big and just like that within a minute the wind shifted from SW to NW resulting in a very choppy and messy sea with waves coming in on a 45 degree angle from behind from both left and right. I felt like a little piece of floating cork being thrown around in every possible direction. I was still making good progress though and arrived safely at Seskarö at the time I originally estimated (I'm getting really good at this, figuring out how long it will take me to kayak from one place to another 😉). The harbour I thought would be good for getting ashore and camping turned out to be everything but. I ended up on a private little beach just next to it walking up to the house asking if I could park my kayak and pitch my tent for the night, they said yes! Thanks guys! I hope you have a great big family get together!
If you ever pass Seskarö, make sure to visit Seskarö Wärdshus, the dinner was absolutely delicious!!!
As I'm sitting here enjoying a fabulous meal my family is on their way up north in the car, the plan is that I will stay put here at Seskarö until they have 4 hours of driving left and then I will pack all my gear and head for Vitikari head where they will great me and this whole trip will be come to an end.
Once again a rainy morning that made my start later than I wished for. I figured out a way though not to have to pack a soaked tent. Started wiping the entire canvas with a wettex sponge cloth before I take the tent down and it works like a charm, when I pitch the tent again at night there is no trace of the mornings rain.
When I got in the kayak the sun started shining and I had a good couple of hours before I started hearing thunder from afar and saw very dark threatening clouds moving my way. Doing big crossings in these conditions always have me feeling a bit worried since you never know if the thunder all of a sudden will come your way and also if the wind will pick up massively. But today it all passed and the sky cleared up. I don't know if you can see it in the photo below but the change from dark cloudy skies to clear was distinct and was reflected in the sea in a fascinating way.
My first stop was the harbour at Junkön where I visited the cafe for a very late lunch. Took a walk around the island afterwards and walked by a cool old mill from the 17th century (when paddling passed this when I arrived I actually thought it was a playground and the mill a replica of the Mumin- house 😂).
As I left the wind had picked up considerably and in very good tail wind I continued for a couple of more hours, stopping for the night at another one of the stony beaches. Big pro, it was windy here and I was able to pitch the tent without getting attacked by the mosquitos.
I'm really getting closer to Haparanda now, probably only have three days left after today. It feels both great but also a bit sad. It has been a fantastic trip so far. Some hard times, sure, but mostly I've really enjoyed it.
Had a very late start today, there was drizzle all morning so I let myself sleep 'til 9 am and then just hanged in the tent until almost lunchtime. Got in the kayak at half past twelve 😱😀. The pro of having such a late start was that the wind had also turned over to more southerly and that means tailwind!
Had a first short leg before I stopped at Pite-Rönnskär for coffee and to have a look at the famous Heidenstam Lighthouse that actually first was in use at Sandhammaren (the southeastern head of Sweden that I paddled passed day on day 17) and then moved all the way up here.
After that it was time for another evening paddle but this time not as calm and pleasant as usual, strong winds, dark clouds and big waves had me staying alert! Specially when rounding the heads since most of them end with a long spit of rocks, heaps of them hiding under the surface when you think the coast is clear.
When getting out of the kayak the mosquitos thought it was pay-back time for yesterday's absence and was waiting for me ready to finish me alive. I worked out a good routine for these late evenings to stay sane, first mosquito repellent on before I even leave the kayak, then dry clothes that covers everything but hands and face, get the cooker going to boil water, while waiting the 10 minutes for the food to get ready pitch the tent and get all the gear in. Then finally eat inside the tent that is warm, dry and mosquito free 😀!!
Fog today again! Not as bad as the one I had yesterday, could see about a kilometre today, but still... I want to see what this part of the coast look like, it's so far north that I don't think I will bring the kayak up here again (any time soon anyway) and large parts of today I saw nothing but a grey wall surrounding me 😢.
Well, first things first, started by taking a detour into Skelleftehamn for some final grocery shopping. Needed more fruit and bread desperately. Paddled through this little passage when I left:

Met two kayakers just north of Skelleftehamn, there are not many other kayakers out there so I started talking to them and they were finishing a trip the started last summer from Haparanda to what should have been Skelleftehamn but ended in Piteå due to bad weather. Just as I left them to paddle their last few kilometers the fog rolled in so now it was time to let the compass and my watch get to work. Measure distance to next head, recalculate distance to minutes, take out the course and vanish into the grey. My idea is that I keep my direction for as long as I calculated that the crossing will take and if I don't see land at that point I will take out my phone to check my position or head west (that should make me get to land pretty quickly). Today my navigation was spot on so did not have to use any of the safe cards. But still, boring paddling...
In the middle of one of the crossings when the fog temporarily lifted a yacht stopped me and asked me if I was the Blue ribbon-paddler, it was the sister of one of the kayakers I talked to earlier today and they heard I was going to be out here so just stopped by to say hi! Who said people from Norrland are silent and unsociable??? I found it to be pretty much the opposite so far! Everybody up here has been super nice and ready to chat.
Stopped at a beach in Romelsösundet to make dinner and then continued on for a few more hours. Ended up on an island without mosquitos! And also got to inherit a burning bonfire from a family that had taken their boat out to this place to have dinner! Thank you! Stayed up pretty late by the fire since it will be raining up until noon tomorrow.
Had a great morning with breakfast in the sun, the pancakes from yesterday! As soon as I sat down in the kayak fog started rolling in from the sea and I couldn't see more than 50 m in front of me. It made navigating complicated and I had to pick up my phone twice to see exactly where I was, ended up not seeing land until I almost landed on the shore far in in the bays. You can see on today's route image that it is not the usual straight line from one head to the next rather a zig-zag pattern as I worked my way up along the coast.
This morning's view...

Paddling in fog is really very very boring since there is absolutely nothing to look at, you're just surrounded by a grey matter. Luckily I found something to cheer me up this morning! Checking the local weather forecast this is what I saw on my screen:

Had a good laugh before I continued paddling even though I did not see much of that sun that was in the forecast. (For you who don't speak Swedish the name of the place can be translated to Vomit-regret-snot!!! 😂)
When getting close to Bjuröklubb the fog finally lifted and I could see where I was going again.
Rounded the head and had my goal set on a meal at the cafe up by the lighthouse. Started talking to two families just as I got ashore, one of the fathers was a keen kayaker and also interested in doing this trip along the coast. They later invited me to join their table up at the cafe, thanks for a good chat and a great tip about camping at Burvikshällorna, one of the best camp sites I've had so far during this trip!
Ended today by paddling late in very calm weather gave me some stunning sights when looking out over the horizon.
Conditions today were optimal so after rounding the head, leaving Täfteåfjärden, I had tailwind the entire day, high life! That and a long day (9 and a half hours) in the kayak made today's new distance record for this trip possible.
Spent pretty much all day paddling but took a break when reaching Ratan and realizing there was a restaurant there 😀, pancakes saved for tomorrow's breakfast instead, yum!
Passed some great spots during the afternoon but when trying to find a decent place to stay the night there was nothing and I ended up on one of the thousands and thousands of stone beaches there are up here along the coast, just next to a house... It's ok to pitch a tent on these beaches but not more, with today's amazing bed rolls you get away with pretty much any surface and still get a decent sleep. Worst bit was the there was no internet coverage at this spot 😫, just went to sleep after doing the necessary chores and getting photos of a nice sunset...
With today's distance I have paddled more than 2000 kilometers since the start 20th of May... That is a very long way and yet it doesn't feel like I gone that far. When thinking about all the days in the kayak they tend to melt together and memories from several days feels like one. Good thing I have this blog to keep my mind and memory straight 😀.
I knew already when I woke up today that this was going to be a tough one, rather strong head wind, a fair distance ahead of me and on top of that a couple of crossings. Got up and out of the tent at a reasonable hour and got to it. First crossing passed like it was nothing and I was surprised to see that I was able to keep my 6 km/h pace in the head wind. Good, calculations of distance paddled super easy this way! Calculation like this and for example number of strokes in a day take up some of my time during the crossings which is good cause it stops me from getting bored out of my mind and I hope also prevents my brain from shrivelling up to a hopeless state before getting back to work in August. The rest of the time I just let my mind wander thinking all sorts of meaningless things and sometimes hopefully also more substantial things.
Had a bit of problem finding a good spot to have lunch, whenever I got close to an island the birds (mostly terns) would just go nuts and make steep dives towards my head, scream and just being plain annoying. Well, finally managed to find this spot and had a quick very austere lunch consisting of boiled eggs, a banana and a capsicum.
Today I think I might have completed my last really long crossing, 16 km across Degerfjärden north of Husum, took almost two and a half hours. Compared to when I started, nearly two months ago, I'm much more relaxed about theses big crossings and have actually started to like it just a little bit. I think it is that I have found a strategy for knowing how far I've come and what distance I have left. By now I know that I usually paddle at the speed of at least 6 km/h (including little breaks for a snack or to check the phone), that means that every kilometre takes 10 minutes and it makes it very easy to keep track of the distance. Before I start I measure the distance on the map and then calculate what time I will arrive on the other side, I also always check the forecast so that I know that the weather will be stable. I think being able to track of how far I've come and how far it is left by checking the time has been a key feature for me (and also listening to music to make it less tedious).
When arriving at Järnnäsklubb I decided to check out the cafe they have in this harbor and get today's first and only coffee only to find that it was closed... To the rescue came Sverker Olofsson!! (Swedish TV-host) who was having coffee with his daughter in the harbour. He asked me where I paddled from and was as surprised as anyone else when I told him I started from the Norwegian border. Thanks Sverker for the coffee and the nice chat!
Paddled for a few more hours after that break and ended up here:
Then continued on to Trysunda and had a look around and also took the opportunity to use the extremely <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12pt;">well equipped kitchen that belonged
to the guest harbour to fix lunch/dinner.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">When I finished my meal it was late afternoon and I had hardly paddled anything today, it was time to get going. Got in the kayak and left Trysunda behind in perfect tail wind. Got to Skagsudde in no time at all and that was the very abrupt end of Höga Kusten. After rounding that head there were nothing left of the steep cliffs and mountains inland, everything is now rather flat. Well it is a heck of a lot easier to find got spots to camp so nothing bad that also brings something good with it 😃.
To: Södra Ulvön
Distance: 66,5 km
Total distance: 1890,5 km
Wind: Up until 2 pm every direction possible thereafter S 4-8 m/s
Weather: mostly sunny, high clouds
Started the day with a great breakfast and then a sightseeing tour around Härnösand. I used to live here up until I was 12 so it was it was weird but mostly great to drive around and have a look at my old neighbourhoods. We also drove up to Vårdkasen to the lookout tower and had a fantastic view of the city.

Then it was back out to Solumshamn and the little beach where my kayak was parked. A big thank you to Doris and Lennart for a great stay and the tour around the city! If you do feel like you have time for a 15 minute detour when driving down south you're always welcome to stop by at the summer house outside Nyköping 😀.
Passed right through the city of Härnösand on my way north and headed for Höga Kusten. This is one of the more striking bits of coastline in Sweden with steep cliffs plunging into the sea. A little bit hard though to find places to get ashore with a kayak.
When reaching Högbonden, island and lighthouse (Sweden's highest situated) I decided that this time I would hit the shore and walk up to the lighthouse (I've passed this place once before but didn't stop). The views from up there were fantastic! Not having much rest during the day I also made time for half an hour in the sun on a cliff.
It was already 6 pm by now but this was not really a good spot to stay the night (absolutely crazy birds down on the beach making horrendous amounts of noise) so I decided I would keep going and pitch my tent on the north shore of Norrfällsviken. The only problem was that when I got there, there was a party going on at the beach and camping with drunken teenagers next to me did not sound like such a good idea. So had no choice but to keep going and headed over to Ulvön where I finally pitched the tent while the mosquitos had a feast. This is clearly the drawback of late night paddling, not having time to do all practical chores when you are finally on dry land before the mosquitos come out to play. I got to see a nice sunset anyway.
Wind: NW 5-10 m/s
Weather: Mostly sunny with some high clouds
This morning it was time to say good bye to the family again, now I won't see them until I reach Happaranda 😔.
Knew I would have head wind all day but that it would settle a bit later it was in no hurry to leave Lörudden. Got everything packed and ready and headed off at half past 9. I had at that point not yet decided on which route I would choose to get across Sundsvallsbukten but getting around the head at Lörudden it all became very clear. The wind was strong and there were big waves, there was no way I would take the closest way 20 km right across to the other side, it's just too far in head wind out on open water. So it was the long way around the bay...
This was one of few days so far that I did not enjoy paddling at all, it was more a constant struggle. The goal was, despite the head wind to reach the south point of Härnön. If I managed that I would be picked up by friends to my parents and be able to sleep in a real bed tonight.

It was yet again windy and cold out on the water today.

Finally just after 7 pm I got to Härnön, now it was only the matter of finding somewhere to park the kayak for the night. I had seen on google earth that there were a lot of little private beaches along the coastline here so I figured I one of these would be a suitable place for the kayak. When I saw a family sitting on a porch having dinner I saw my chance and asked them if I could use their beach over night for the kayak and they said yes!! Thank you so much! I didn't get your names but it was brilliant that I could use your lovely beach!
Got in contact with Doris and Lennart and got picked up. Was able to do some washing, have a shower, got treated to a very nice meal and a good night's sleep! Perfect way to end a day of tough paddling!
Today has mainly been a rest day/stuck due to too strong winds. But it was surely not a day lost, spent it with the family in Sundsvall mixing to dos (like getting groceries) with pleasure. Played a round of mini golf in the afternoon, but we were so slow getting through all the holes that we only got about half way before we had to get back to Galtström again so that I would have time to paddle up to Lörudden. The wind had eased a bit late afternoon but I still had to paddle close to the shore the whole way up to Lörudden.
Weather: Sunny

Knew from the weather forecast that this would be a tough day with winds from 7 m/s up to 15 m/s from NW. Heading out on a day like this it is always with a bit of anxiety not really knowing how bad it's going to be, it is so dependent on the direction of the wind, how it will twist and turn around the heads and in the bays and what sort of waves you'll get. My goal was to reach Lörudden but it became pretty obvious after just a couple of kilometres that I could forget about that, the wind forced me to take the long way up along the coast, along the shore of every bay to seek what shelter I could get. And still, I consider myself lucky, if this wind would have come more from north or even worse northeast I would not have been able to paddle at all. Or if I would have had this wind yesterday when doing all the crossings... When the worst gusts came my only focus was on not going backwards and then 200 m further on the on the leeward side of a head I could rather comfortably paddle in light head wind. Well, it was not monotonous today, that's for sure.

Since Thursday's forecast looked even worse the plan was to have the family come up and join me and to take a day off paddling and spend it with them instead. They left Stockholm after lunch and through lots of texting and checking google earth during the afternoon we decided that Galtström was a reachable goal for both kayak and car. The last bit of paddling into the bay where Galtström is took forever in dead on head wind and when finally getting out of the worst gusts picking my phone up to see whereabouts the rest of the family was I heard and saw three crazy persons a little bit further on a flat cliff jumping up and down shouting! It was them, they had seen me while driving along the bay and as soon as they found a good place to park they ran down to the shore to greet me! What excellent timing! And when looking around also an excellent spot for camping! Great beach, nice cliffs, grass to pitch the tents, fire place and a table and benches to sit on. Had the best and cosiest evening!!!

First I just have show this photo, this is the view I woke up to this morning:

Pretty stunning!
Today I was more or less only doing crossings again and it tends to be a bit boring but today I realised that with my new waterproof shell, that I got for the cell phone during my week off from paddling, I can have the cell phone in one of the pockets in my life jacket and listen to music while I'm out there. What a difference!! Time flew by and so did the kilometres! It does consume quite a lot of battery but since I now have 4 power banks (got two more of these too during the week off😀) that I try to recharge as often as I can I should be ok any way. First Aid Kit, Kent, Ulf Lundell, REM all fit in perfectly with the great surroundings, Justin Timberlake and "Sexy Back" maybe seemed a bit out of place out there on the water...
Hornslandet is a weird place, all along the shore there is a couple of hundred metres with nothing but stones and then inland from that the forest begins.
On the north corner of Hornslandet I paddled passed Kuggören, for all of you listening to the weather forecast this should be a familiar name, this is what it looks like:
Made it to Stocka hamn in the evening and got talking to a man when I got out of the kayak, he offered me to sleep in the community's Bagarstuga (baking house, a house with a large wooden stove where they make flat bread). Sweet! They apparently started doing this with all kayakers that pass by so for all you HBB-paddlers passing here later this summer; This is a great place to stay and the restaurant has excellent food!
To: Fäbodön
Distance: 48 km
Total distance: 1659,5 km
Wind: NW turning SW late afternoon 2-7 m/s
Weather: Sunny all day but cold, 16 C
Got up relatively early to get started with today's first mission, fixing the damage done to the kayak yesterday. Got all the repair stuff out from the absolute <span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">furthest back corner of the rear dry compartment (sanding papers, glass fibre plaster and gel coat repair) and got to work. It wasn't that bad and after some glass fibre plastering and sanding I got the gel coat on and it should at least not leak anymore. It's not pretty but I'll deal with that when I get back home again.

Due to this I started paddling rather late in head wind that wasn't too strong and had a good sunny day in the kayak even though it was cold (and has been the last couple of days), I have all gear, jacket, hat and poogies on while paddling. It doesn't really have that summery feeling to it when being covered up like that but it's not raining so I shouldn't be complaining.
This part of the coast is also filled with rocks everywhere, makes paddling close to the shore a challenge and after yesterday's encounter I now stay as far away as I can...
Breakfast in the sun today while drying all the wet clothes from yesterday. Had a look at the map during breakfast and realised this will be a day of just crossing bay after bay, sigh! Estimating the distance up to Axmars brygga to a bit less than 60 km and decided to give it my best shot, picturing dinner at the restuarant as the goal today.
When stopping for a late and quick lunch at Iggön I saw that my goal was within reach and took the shortest possible way over the next bay, 13 km open sea.
This is what most of my day has been like, land somewhere far over there...

When reaching the other side and going through a narrow strait at Gåsholma at good speed I suddenly heard a crash and the kayak jumped up in the air and stopped! Shit! I hit a rock that was lurking just beneath the surface 😫. Fearing the worst I immediately hit the shore and had a look at the damage done to the kayak. The hit took a piece of the gel coat shell off and I figured it was bad enough to cause leakage into the front dry compartment. Kept going anyway while looking carefully at the front to see if it started going deeper and stopped after a few kilometres to check how much water got in. Luckily it wasn't too bad, there was some but not much water at that point. When reaching Axmars brygga an hour later about 50 ml had leaked into the dry compartment. So tomorrow I will have to play handyman (luckily I'm actually a decent handy(wo)man and will probably be able to fix it) and take out the gel coat repair kit and try to fix it so that it will hold for another 800 km... 😳. I'd rather be paddling but this will have to be attended to first.
To: Stony beach west of Långsand
Distance: 48 km
Total distance: 1556,5 km
Wind: S-SW-W 5-11 m/s
Weather: mostly cloudy with heavy showers and thunderstorms, about 10 minutes of sun.
Today has been a tough day. I'm still feeling tired from the cold and I'm coughing like crazy and on top of that the weather was not exactly what you wish for. It was raining when I woke up but managed to find a spot in between the showers to take down the tent and pack everything. The plan today was not to leave the kayak until I was finished paddling. That's usually the best thing to do a rainy day since getting out of the kayak will only make you more wet and also cold. Lunch was prepared in the form of a sandwich and 2 boiled eggs.
Had a good first hour before the rain started to pour down. But in-between every now and the the sun came out so it wasn't too bad.
Somewhere along the coast at the nature reserve Kapplasse I found this cave/crevice, since this was on the north shore and the wind came from southwest there were no waves and I could paddle into it. Only about 10 m long but still cool 😊.
When crossing Lövstabukten I started hearing thunder from where I was heading and this made me really uncomfortable, 3 km to land and once again I pictured myself struck by lightning. There had been no warnings about thunderstorms in the forecast so I was quite surprised when I saw the first flash of lightning. It was just hoping for the best and continue. The thunderstorm luckily went further north and I did not end up getting fried in the middle of the bay 😉.
Ended up on a stony beach pitching the tent during todays worst shower but the best thing is then to come... Getting into the tent, putting on dry clothes and get the sleeping bag out 😊. Very warm and cosy now!
Woke up to the sound of raindrops on the canvas around 7 am, went back to sleep and did not wake up again until 9! Went to bed at 10 pm yesterday so that means I slept for 11 hours!!! This cold is taking its toll for sure. Started paddling after 11 thinking it will be a short day today since it would start raining early evening according to the forecast. Well, as always, they change and the rain will start tomorrow morning instead so after dinner and coffee in Öregrund I continued passed the fourth and last one of the Swedish nuclear power plants, Forsmark, but still ended up caught in one heavy shower before all clouds scattered and the day ended with a fantastic evening.
Day started with a cosy breakfast at Christel's house and after that this time it was me staying waving to the family when they took off first this morning.
About an hour later I had everything packed and ready, water bags filled up, clean clothes and fresh food to last me for about a week. Said good bye to Christel. Thanks again, it was great!
My original plan was to go on the outside of Väddö, past Arholma but the very calm sea and threatening clouds inland made me check the forecast once more and indeed it had been changed.
Now saying there would be very strong winds (up to 13 m/s) all afternoon, a change of plan was needed and I headed towards the more sheltered Väddö channel/strait instead. It was nice at first but after hours of the same thing and a stop for coffee at Älmsta I got incredibly bored but the goal today was to get out on the other side of this darn strait and I was not going to give in due to boredom.
Just got to get back to Älmsta and that coffee break again, I forgot my jacket on a chair outside the pharmacy when finishing yesterday's blog post and didn't discover it until I got back to the kayak 😨. More or less ran back and the very nice ladies at the pharmacy had taken care of it!!! A very big thank you to the three of you! You made my day! 💐
Finally around 6 pm I got out and paddled straight over to the closest islands. Found a good spot on the north shore of one of them and after a while the sun even came out. Saw the nice sunset from the tent and went to sleep right after that (I've been feeling really tired from a cold I'm having, that's what you get from spending time around lots of people again...).
The paddling up until noon was in what I consider as perfect conditions, sun, a very light tail wind and beautiful surroundings. The area around Finnhamn has lots of islands with great cliffs and windswept pines, my favourite! There is also a special scent from these island when the sun is out that smells like summer for me.
After lunch at Blidö the wind picked up and was turning over to southeast so no more perfect tailwind this day since I was going northeast 😢.
Had a really close encounter with a ferry just before passing Kapellskär (I did not use zoom for this picture...). I think I need to stop trying to cross the fare ways before all these big ships or I will end up under one. But I always think I have plenty of time and also underestimate the distance over to the other side of the fare way, if it's even possible to see where it ends and what course the ship will take...
When approaching Gräddö, Christel was there waving from the jetty and showing me where to go. Great to see her again after 6 weeks off work!
When walking up to the house with all the gear we almost got run over by my family arriving by car, my husband didn't get a position for the address I gave him so he used the "find my friends" function on the iPhone (that is how he keeps track of me while I'm paddling since I don't use a Spot or any other form of GPS with positioning), perfect timing!!!
Spent a great evening with delicious food and fantastic company at Christel's place and ended the evening with going down for a swim for those who wanted (I was not one of the brave ones😁)!
Another 61 km today in beatiful tail wind! And this tail wind seems to continue for days to come, let's just hope the forecast is right this time, fingers crossed.
Fell asleep last night while trying to complete yesterdays blog post, several nights of bad sleep was taking its toll but this night the conditions were perfect, found a completely flat surface under a tree so the sun wouldn't make the tent stinking hot in the morning and no wind to make the canvas flap during the night. Slept like a log and didn't wake up until 7:30! That and the not yet completed post made my take off somewhat tardy this morning and it was closer to 10 am before I left.
Plan today was to paddle passed Sandhamn and then continue north from there for another hour or two. Most of today's route was through great archipelago.
During the morning I passed an old very interesting looking yacht with lots of people on board. I think I heard someone calling out instructions so it might have been some sort of school ship.
Sandhamn

Since the break in Sandhamn ended up being close to 3 hours I paddled late this evening again, passed Möja and a little bit further before calling it a night at a nice little spot where the rock was still warm after today's sunshine.
